Artist Statement
Somewhat of a subconscious act I’ve allowed my work to challenge thoughts on pivotal times/emotions in my life; treating my art as if it were a visual journal.
Higher education. Living in Oklahoma. Relocating. Living in DC. Navigating a city. The meaning of community. Family. Working for non-profit. Being an entrepreneur. Being Queer. Being Black. Being a woman...
Abstract images- art period, has the ability to transport one to higher mind states, much like music. Jean-Michel Basquiat (late 1970’s/80’s) & Jackson Pollock (1940’s) are two extremely different artists from time periods apart but their inspiration has heavily influenced my work. Basquiat, a pop art icon who used many images that represented black culture in abstract ways, had overdosed by the time he was 27 and approaching his early 30’s Pollock had barely discovered the painting style that put him on the map. Pollock introduced neo/American expressionism with his drip painting techniques. My work is reminiscent of both but incorporating a bit of an afrofuturist aspect to it. With fascinations of the “feel” of musical works like Sun Ra, who draws inspiration from the galaxies, what once was Jupiter, Mars, in relation to the motherland of Africa, especially Egypt.
Contrasting colors, aerosol shading techniques and molassed drip formations are often slight symbolisms for depth in human emotion and interaction. As I evolve my thoughts and actions on earth, so does my artistic perspective.
